There are actually two main different groups of plants that make up the Geranium family: true Geraniums and Pelargoniums. True Geraniums are the types of Geranium flowers that decorate gardens and houses. They do not produce enough essential oils and are not used for extraction and steam distillation. Pelargonium Geraniums produce more essential oils and are used by food, beverage, perfumes and cosmetics industries for their bright and vibrant fragrance.
In the category of Pelargonium Geraniums, there is a rare subcategory called Pelargonium Graveolens, or “Scented Geraniums”. Why this name? Because they have the reputation to emit strongest, more delicious and complex scent. That is what our essential oil is, a Pelargonium Graveolens var. Roseum, a Rose Scented Geranium, coming directly from South Africa where this variety is from.
In Africa, Geraniums are well known for their medicinal uses. For thousands of years, they were used to treat surface wounds on the skin like burns and scratches. They have also been used to soothe various respiratory symptoms.
Once Geraniums were introduced to Europe in the 17th century, they became known as a home protector. People of old Europe would hang Geraniums in their homes to keep evil spirits away and to fill their spaces with fresh, floral and fruity scents. Today, this very same flower serves as a wonderful home and garden decoration, but also in a large variety of ways in our every day’s life.
